Nothing says fall quite like the warm, cozy aroma of pumpkin spice. With the right essential oils, you can make your own pumpkin spice essential oil blend at home using sweet Blood Orange, warm Cinnamon Leaf, spicy Clove and Ginger, and just a touch of earthy Patchouli.

And this fall blend isn't just for your diffuser. We're sharing several easy ways to use that cozy pumpkin spice scent throughout your home, including a room spray, carpet freshener, passive scent jar, and more.

No artificial pumpkin fragrance is needed. Instead, we'll build the familiar aroma of pumpkin spice by combining pure essential oils with naturally warm, sweet, and spicy aromas. If you're looking for more ways to reduce synthetic fragrance in your home, read our guide to natural alternatives to synthetic fragrance.

Let's make the blend first, then we'll show you 5 ways to use it this fall.

Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend Recipe

Our pumpkin spice essential oil blend combines sweet citrus with traditional fall spices and just enough Patchouli to give the aroma a warm, rich base.

Master Blend

Combine:

Make a 50-Drop Bottle

  • 20 drops Blood Orange
  • 10 drops Cinnamon Leaf
  • 10 drops Clove
  • 5 drops Ginger Root
  • 5 drops Patchouli

Add the essential oils to a clean amber glass bottle, replace the cap, and gently roll the bottle between your hands to combine.

Tip: Let your pumpkin spice essential oil blend rest for 24–48 hours before making adjustments. As the individual aromas mingle, the finished scent can become smoother and more balanced.

Want it sweeter? Add a little more Blood Orange.

Want a stronger spice note? Add Cinnamon Leaf carefully—a little goes a long way.

Want it deeper and warmer? Add another drop of Patchouli, but go slowly. Patchouli can quickly become the dominant aroma.

Love Blood Orange? Its sweet, bright citrus aroma makes it one of our favorite oils for blending. Discover more ways to use it in our Blood Orange Essential Oil Uses, Recipes & Blends guide.

Now that your blend is ready, let's put it to work.

1. Pumpkin Spice Diffuser Blend

One of the easiest ways to enjoy your pumpkin spice essential oil blend is in your diffuser.

The combination of Blood Orange, Cinnamon Leaf, Clove, Ginger Root, and Patchouli creates a warm fall aroma that's wonderful for kitchens, living rooms, entryways, and cozy evenings at home.

You'll Need

  • Essential oil diffuser
  • Water, according to your diffuser's instructions
  • 6–10 drops Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend

Directions

Fill your diffuser with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Add 6–10 drops of your PSL blend, adjusting the amount for the size of your diffuser and room. Turn it on and enjoy.

Try this: Diffuse it on a cool fall morning while you're making coffee or breakfast. The sweet citrus and warm spices create that cozy coffee-shop atmosphere without relying on a conventional pumpkin fragrance.

2. Pumpkin Spice Room Spray

Want that warm fall aroma without running a diffuser? Make a Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Room Spray for a quick seasonal refresh throughout your home.

You'll Need

  • 4 oz glass spray bottle
  • 20 drops Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend
  • 1 oz (2 tablespoons) high-proof grain alcohol
  • 3 oz distilled water

Directions

Add 1 oz of high-proof grain alcohol to your spray bottle. Add 20 drops of the Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend and gently swirl to combine. Add 3 oz distilled water, leaving a little room at the top of the bottle. Replace the spray top and shake well.

To Use

Shake well before each use and lightly mist into the air whenever you want to bring a warm pumpkin-spice aroma into your home.

This is especially nice in living rooms, kitchens, entryways, and bathrooms during the fall months.

Important: Use high-proof grain alcohol intended for this type of formulation—not rubbing alcohol. Because essential oils and water don't remain perfectly mixed in a simple DIY spray, shake well before every use.

Avoid spraying directly onto furniture, finished wood, painted surfaces, bedding, pets, or other materials that could be stained or damaged by essential oils. Test around delicate surfaces first.

Safety Note: Alcohol is flammable. Keep the room spray away from flames, candles, fireplaces, stovetops, and other ignition sources.

3. Pumpkin Spice Carpet Freshener

This might be one of the easiest fall essential oil recipes you'll make.

Baking soda provides the base while our Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend adds that warm seasonal aroma.

You'll Need

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 10–15 drops Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend
  • Glass jar with lid

Directions

Pour the baking soda into your jar.

Add the essential oil blend a few drops at a time, stirring thoroughly to distribute the oils throughout the baking soda.

Close the jar and allow the mixture to sit for several hours—or overnight—to let the aroma distribute.

How to Use

Sprinkle a light layer over your carpet. Allow it to sit for approximately 15–30 minutes. Vacuum thoroughly.

Always test a small, inconspicuous area of carpet first and keep children and pets away from the treated area until the powder has been completely vacuumed.

4. Pumpkin Spice Scent Jar

No diffuser? You can still enjoy your pumpkin spice blend.

A simple baking-soda scent jar provides a passive way to add a subtle fall aroma to smaller spaces.

You'll Need

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 10–15 drops Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend
  • Small glass jar
  • Vented or perforated lid

Directions

Place the baking soda into your jar. Add the essential oil blend and stir thoroughly. Cover the jar with a lid that allows air to circulate. Place it in an entryway, bathroom, mudroom, or another small area where you'd like a subtle fall aroma. When the scent starts to fade, give the baking soda a stir. Add a few more drops of your blend when needed.

Keep the jar somewhere children and pets can't reach or spill it.

5. Pumpkin Spice Foaming Hand Soap

Why stop at making your home smell like fall?

You can bring some of that warm seasonal aroma to the kitchen or bathroom with a simple pumpkin spice foaming hand soap.

There is one important difference, though.

We're not going to use the complete Pumpkin Spice master blend in this recipe.

Cinnamon Leaf and Clove are particularly potent essential oils when used on the skin. Instead, we'll make a gentler variation inspired by our Pumpkin Spice aroma.

Blood Orange, a small amount of Cinnamon Leaf, and Ginger Root still provide a wonderful fall-inspired aroma.

You'll Need

  • 8 oz foaming soap dispenser
  • 2 tablespoons unscented liquid Castile soap
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
  • Distilled water
  • 4 drops Blood Orange Essential Oil
  • 1 drop Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil
  • 1 drop Ginger Root Essential Oil

Directions

Add the Castile soap and vegetable glycerin to your foaming soap dispenser. Add the essential oils and gently mix. Slowly add distilled water, leaving enough room at the top for the foaming pump. Replace the pump and gently turn the bottle back and forth to combine. Pump onto wet hands, wash thoroughly, and rinse.

Bonus: Pumpkin Spice Scented Pinecones

Here's an easy way to make your fall decorations smell as good as they look.

You'll Need

  • Clean, completely dry pinecones
  • 10–20 drops Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend
  • Large glass container or sealable bag

Directions

Place your pinecones in the container or bag. Add 10–20 drops of the Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend. Seal the container and allow the pinecones to sit overnight. The next day, arrange them in a decorative bowl or add them to a fall centerpiece. When the scent begins to fade, refresh them with a few additional drops.

Tip: Be careful where you place essential-oil-scented decorations. Concentrated essential oils can damage certain plastics, paints, wood finishes, and other surfaces.

One Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend, So Many Fall Possibilities

That's one of the things we love about essential oils: one blend can be used in so many different ways.

Our Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend starts with just five oils:

Blood Orange + Cinnamon Leaf + Clove + Ginger Root + Patchouli

Together, they create a warm, spicy, slightly sweet aroma that's perfect for fall.

Use the blend in your diffuser. Make a room spray. Freshen your carpets. Create a scent jar. Make scented pinecones. Or use some of the individual oils to create a fall-inspired foaming hand soap.

And when the season changes, those same individual essential oils can be combined in completely different ways.

That's the fun of building your essential oil collection—you aren't buying an oil for just one recipe.

You're learning how to use it again and again.

Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils are highly concentrated. Always follow appropriate usage and dilution guidance for each individual oil. Some oils require additional precautions, so familiarize yourself with an oil's safety information before use. Keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets.

Want to learn more about using essential oils safely? Read our Complete Essential Oil Safety Guide for dilution guidance, important precautions, and tips for using essential oils throughout your home.

Cinnamon Leaf and Clove essential oils deserve particular care because they can irritate or sensitize skin when used improperly. A home-fragrance formula should not automatically be repurposed as a topical formula.

FAQs

What essential oils make a pumpkin spice scent?

A classic pumpkin spice aroma can be created with warm spice essential oils such as Cinnamon Leaf, Clove, and Ginger Root.

Our recipe adds Blood Orange for a sweet, bright note and a small amount of Patchouli to create a deeper, warmer base.

What is in a pumpkin spice essential oil blend?

Our Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend combines:

4 parts Blood Orange + 2 parts Cinnamon Leaf + 2 parts Clove + 1 part Ginger Root + 1 part Patchouli.

You can make as much or as little as you'd like by maintaining the same proportions.

Does pumpkin spice essential oil actually contain pumpkin?

No. The familiar aroma we associate with pumpkin spice doesn't actually come from pumpkin.

Instead, the recognizable scent is created primarily from warm spices such as cinnamon, clove, ginger, nutmeg, and similar aromatic ingredients.

Our essential-oil version recreates that cozy fall character using Blood Orange, Cinnamon Leaf, Clove, Ginger Root, and Patchouli.

How do you make a pumpkin spice diffuser blend?

For a simple pumpkin spice diffuser blend, try:

  • 4 drops Blood Orange
  • 2 drops Cinnamon Leaf
  • 2 drops Clove
  • 1 drop Ginger Root
  • 1 drop Patchouli

Adjust the total number of drops according to your diffuser manufacturer's recommendations and the size of your room.

How can I make my house smell like pumpkin spice naturally?

There are several ways to create a naturally derived pumpkin-spice aroma in your home.

Try using a pumpkin spice essential oil blend in your diffuser, room spray, passive scent jar, carpet freshener, or scented pinecones.

You can also make a traditional fall simmer pot using ingredients such as orange peel, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and fresh ginger.

Can I put pumpkin spice essential oils on my skin?

Don't apply the concentrated Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend from this article directly to your skin.

Cinnamon Leaf and Clove are potent essential oils with specific considerations for skin use.

A diffuser or home-fragrance recipe should never automatically be converted into a topical recipe.

Can I use a pumpkin spice essential oil blend around pets?

Use extra care when diffusing essential oils in a home with pets. Species, individual health, oil selection, concentration, ventilation, and exposure can all matter.

Never apply this blend to a pet or add essential oils to their food or water.

When diffusing, use good ventilation and make sure pets are able to leave the room.

How long will a homemade pumpkin spice essential oil blend last?

Store your blend tightly closed in a dark glass bottle away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.

Because citrus oils such as Blood Orange can oxidize more readily than some other essential oils, making smaller batches is a good approach. Discard the blend if you notice a significant change in its aroma or appearance.

What can I use instead of Patchouli?

If you're not a fan of Patchouli, simply leave it out.

You can add another part of Blood Orange instead. The finished blend will be somewhat brighter and less earthy but will still have a wonderful warm-spice aroma.

How can I make my pumpkin spice essential oil blend smell richer and warmer?

The beauty of this Pumpkin Spice Essential Oil Blend is that you can easily adjust it to suit your preference.

For a sweeter, brighter fall aroma, add another drop or two of Blood Orange.

For a warmer, spicier blend, slightly increase the Cinnamon Leaf or Ginger Root.

For a deeper, richer aroma, add a little more Patchouli. Start with just one additional drop—Patchouli is a strong base note and a little goes a long way.

You can also experiment with the proportions until you find your perfect fall blend.

Start with our original recipe of 4 parts Blood Orange, 2 parts Cinnamon Leaf, 2 parts Clove, 1 part Ginger Root, and 1 part Patchouli, then make it your own.
