The researchers tested the oils against five airborne fungal strains:
- Chaetomium globosum
- Penicillium chrysogenum
- Cladosporium cladosporioides
- Alternaria alternata
- Aspergillus fumigatus
These genera are especially interesting in the context of indoor environments because species of Penicillium, Cladosporium, Alternaria and Aspergillus are frequently studied as airborne or environmental fungi.
Of all six oils, oregano demonstrated the greatest direct-contact antifungal activity against every fungal strain tested.

The researchers confirmed fungicidal activity by transferring the treated fungi to fresh growth media that contained no essential oil. When the fungi did not resume mycelial growth or spore germination, the result showed that the oil had done more than temporarily slow growth.

Oregano Vapor Completely Inhibited Fungal Growth
The same study also tested the essential oils in their vapor phase. This is particularly relevant to oregano because essential oils are volatile—their aromatic compounds naturally evaporate and disperse into the surrounding air.
At a concentration of 0.005%, oregano vapor produced a fungistatic effect, meaning it stopped or slowed the fungi’s growth under the experimental conditions.
At 0.075%, oregano vapor completely inhibited the mycelial growth of all five fungal strains. The researchers then transferred the inhibited fungal samples into fresh media. The authors noted that essential-oil vapors can sometimes work especially well against fungi.
