A 0.5% Oregano Detergent Improved Cleaning Performance
In 2013, Rhoades and colleagues investigated oregano essential oil as an antimicrobial additive for liquid detergent. Their study included hand-washing trials as well as contaminated-cloth and surface-cleaning experiments.

Adding oregano essential oil at 0.5% by volume improved the detergent’s cleaning performance against three of the four pathogens tested. It also reduced bacterial survival on the cloth after cleaning.

Oregano Produced 26-to-54-Millimeter Inhibition Zones
Puškárová and colleagues published another detailed study in 2017. The team compared oregano, thyme, clove, lavender, clary sage and arborvitae essential oils against nine bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Yersinia enterocolitica, Bacillus cereus, Arthrobacter protophormiae and Pseudomonas fragi.
Oregano and thyme were the strongest oils across the bacterial panel. Oregano produced growth-inhibition zones measuring 26 to 54 millimeters.
The researchers then measured the minimum inhibitory concentration, or MIC—the lowest concentration that prevented detectable growth. Oregano’s MIC was 0.025% against all nine bacterial strains. Its minimum bactericidal concentration ranged from 0.025% to 0.05%, depending on the bacterium.

Oregano Also Demonstrated Activity Against Five Fungi
The same team tested the oils against Chaetomium globosum, Penicillium chrysogenum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Alternaria alternata and Aspergillus fumigatus.
Oregano inhibited the five fungi at concentrations ranging from 0.01% to 0.025%. Its minimum fungicidal concentrations ranged from 0.025% to 0.075%.
At 0.075%, oregano vapor completely inhibited the mycelial growth of all five fungal strains. When the samples were transferred to fresh growth media without essential oil, the fungi still did not resume growing, confirming a fungicidal result under the study conditions.
