What is athlete’s foot?
Athlete’s foot is commonly associated with dermatophytes—fungi that thrive on keratin found in the outer layers of skin, hair, and nails. Two important dermatophyte genera are Trichophyton and Microsporum.
The warm, damp environment inside socks and shoes gives these organisms an inviting place to flourish. Locker-room floors, pool decks, shared showers, damp towels, and footwear that has not fully dried can also contribute.
Common changes associated with athlete’s foot can include itching or a burning sensation, flaky or scaly skin, redness between the toes, dry-looking skin on the soles or sides, small cracks, a circular or spreading edge, recurring foot odor, and changes that improve and then return.

A 2020 study by Parrish and colleagues evaluated 65 individual essential oils and 21 essential-oil blends against dermatophytes from the Trichophyton and Microsporum genera.
Rather than testing only one laboratory organism, researchers used 16 clinically derived species and strains. This included Trichophyton rubrum, one of the dermatophytes commonly associated with athlete’s foot.
The researchers observed cultures for 21 days and compared essential oils with standard antifungal compounds. They also examined minimum inhibitory dilutions, oil combinations, and differences between single and repeated applications.
Five individual oils stood out as the most potent: oregano, thyme, cassia, cinnamon, and cilantro. Following just one application, these oils completely inhibited every tested dermatophyte species and strain for the full 21-day period.
That sustained result is especially interesting. Several other oils produced substantial inhibition during the first 10 days, but their effects declined by day 21. Oregano remained completely inhibitory throughout the entire observation period.
The researchers also found synergistic activity when oregano was combined with cilantro, cassia, or cinnamon bark. Synergy means the combination produced a stronger effect than expected from the individual components alone.
This was an in-vitro study rather than a human skin trial, but it gives oregano an exceptionally strong research foundation. Among dozens of oils, oregano was one of the few that completely inhibited every clinical dermatophyte tested for all 21 days.
What did the Candida study find?
Dermatophytes are especially relevant to athlete’s foot, but oregano has also been studied against Candida species.
A 2022 study by Cid-Chevecich and colleagues evaluated Origanum vulgare essential oil against two Candida albicans strains and two non-albicans Candida strains.
The researchers measured the minimum inhibitory concentration, or MIC—the lowest tested concentration that stops visible growth. The reported results were:
- 0.01 mg/L for Candida albicans ATCC 90029
- 0.97 mg/L for Candida albicans ATCC 10231
- 2.6 mg/L for Candida dubliniensis
- 5.3 mg/L for Candida krusei
At those concentrations, oregano essential oil inhibited fungal morphogenesis, adhesion, and proliferation by at least 50% across the tested strains. Morphogenesis allows fungal cells to change form, adhesion helps them attach to surfaces, and proliferation allows an established community to expand.
The team also examined formed Candida albicans biofilms. Oregano essential oil reduced biofilm viability, with IC50 values of 7.4 mg/L and 2.8 mg/L for the two strains. An IC50 represents the concentration that reduced the measured activity by half.
The practical takeaway is exciting: oregano interfered with several behaviors fungi use to establish and maintain themselves, including changing form, attaching, proliferating, and remaining viable within biofilms.
How carvacrol helps explain the results
Carvacrol is one of oregano essential oil’s leading aromatic constituents and an important reason researchers continue studying it.
In a foundational study by Ultee and colleagues, carvacrol altered the permeability of bacterial cell membranes. It disrupted the movement of hydrogen and potassium ions, interfered with the cell’s internal pH, and caused a loss of viability.
Later studies involving fungi have reported related patterns, including changes in membrane integrity, leakage of cellular contents, abnormal or flattened fungal structures, reduced formation of hyphae, reduced adhesion, and lower biofilm viability.
In a 2024 oregano nail-lacquer study, researchers observed fewer fungal hyphae and spores after five days. Microscopy showed that remaining hyphae were flattened, abnormally shaped, and had lost cellular contents.
