Carrier oils are plant-derived, fixed oils used to dilute potent essential oils before topical application, making them safe for skin use and extending their benefits.
What Are Carrier Oils?
Unlike essential oils, carrier oils are fatty oils extracted from seeds, kernels, or nuts (e.g., jojoba, sweet almond, coconut, grapeseed, and avocado). They do not evaporate and have little to no strong aroma.
Popular Carrier Oils
Sweet Almond Oil: Lightweight, rich in vitamin E, ideal for most skin types.
Fractionated Coconut Oil: Liquid, non-greasy, long shelf life.
Jojoba Oil: Actually a wax, closely mimics skin sebum, excellent for face and hair.
Grapeseed Oil: Light, astringent, suitable for oily skin.
Benefits and Usage
Carrier oils nourish the skin, reduce essential oil sensitivity, and improve absorption. Typical dilution is 1–3% for adults (2–6 drops essential oil per 10 ml carrier). Always patch-test first.
